The Czech Republic lies in Central Europe and has a temperate continental climate (relatively hot summers and cold and snowy winters). The total area is 78 866 km2. The population is about 10,5 mil. people. 1948 Czechoslovakia became a communist-ruled state. 20 years later the increasing dissatisfaction culminated in attempts to reform the communist regime. In 1989, during Velvet Revolution, the regime collapsed. On 1 January 1993, Czechoslovakia peacefully dissolved into its constituent states, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. It has been a member of the EU since 2004. The Czech Republic is a parliamentary republic – it has a multi-party system, a limited number of parties are successful in parliamentary elections. There are currently 5 parties in the Chamber of Deputies (in descending order of seats) – the Social Democratic Party, the Civic Democratic Party, TOP 09, the Communist Party and Public Affairs. Since 2010, the Prime Minister is Petr Nečas. The second President of the Czech Republic (since 2003, re-elected 2008) is Václav Klaus. The currency here is the Czech crown (1 EUR = c. 24 CZK, 1 USD = c. 17 CZK). The Czech landscape is varied. The republic is divided into 13 regions and the capital city of Prague.
